Ever wondered what the next wave of young British artists are exploring? A new exhibition entitled 'As the World Turns' offers Sydneysiders a rare opportunity to view the work of eight of London's hottest contemporary artists, aged between 30 and 39 years.

Curated by Nina Miall, Director of one of London's leading commercial galleries Haunch of Venison, the exhibition  includes a large suspended kite, memorabilia from a fictitious Kraut rock band and a recording of Vivaldi's Four Seasons slowed to the speed of the earth's rotation.

As the World Turns runs at Anna Schwartz Gallery at CarriageWorks (245 Wilson St, Darlington) until 21 August 2011.

Vernissage of the Hong Kong Art Fair featuring light installations by Dan Flavin

The team at [art]iculate is just back from a whirlwind tour of some of the best contemporary visual art around the world taking in the Hong Kong Art Fair and the vernissage week of the 53rd Venice Biennale with a stopover at a few London galleries in between.

Highlights in Venice included Christian Marclay's 24 hour clock film collage in the Arsenale, Maurizio Cattelan's taxidermy pigeons peppered throughout the main Biennale Illuminazioni exhibition, tropical print military uniforms in the Korean pavilion, Urs Fischer's life-size, slow-melting wax figures and a wonderfully techno coloured light and perspex work by Gino Marotta in the Italian pavilion.

From garage to gallery... KALIMANRAWLINS to unveil new premises

The new contemporary gallery KALIMANRAWLINS is set to unveil its South Yarra premises with an inaugural group exhibition opening early July 2011.

The venture unites the expertise and networks of two of Australia’s most respected gallerists from Sydney and Melbourne: Vasili Kaliman, the former Director of Sydney’s Kaliman Galleries and the former Directors of Melbourne’s Uplands Gallery, Jarrod and Tara Rawlins.

The gallery is located at 9 Ellis Street, South Yarra in Melbourne in a refitted former industrial garage that is being transformed by Room11 architectural practice.

The directors of KALIMANRAWLINS have represented some of Australia’s most sought after contemporary artists and are expected to bring a number of these names to join them in their new venture.

It's the art world, but not as we know it. London-based Australian artist Jess MacNeil commented on this work, in which she has painted directly onto orange acrylic sheets: "the images and objects.. trace and respond to nuanced shifts in time and space: the sliding of the gaze over the landscape, individuals transitioning through public space and the trails left by the artist's own body via the motion of the camera and the gestures of the brush". The painting was sourced by [art]iculate for a commercial office space in Sydney.

New work by Emily Floyd

Melbourne-based contemporary artist Emily Floyd will unveil an exhibition of new work entitled 'An Open Space' at Anna Schwartz Gallery, and running from 28 April until 28 May. 


Whilst much of Floyd's practice is concerned with text and the written word, she is also known for her large-scale public art installations such as the giant bird & worm sculpture on Victoria's Eastlink freeway commission. Both elements are fused in this new exhibition in Melbourne.  The artist chatted with Melbourne's Broadsheet about her practice earlier this year, which can be read here.

Behind the scenes at the museum

Sydney-based contemporary artist Silke Raetze is the first artist to have had works shown as part of an exhibition at the Australian Museum as the result of a three-month artist in residency, spent delving into their extensive collections of exotic Birds of Paradise specimens.  Silke will discuss her practice and the works in the exhibition at the Australian Museum as part of their Jurassic Lounge late night openings on Tuesday 12th April. This series of work will also be exhibited in a solo exhibition at Michael Reid at Elizabeth Bay from 2 August until 3 September 2011.
