Banksy works heading to Cockatoo Island

A private collection of 23 works by Banksy, the world’s most famous street artist, is headed to Sydney's Cockatoo Island this November as part of the Outpost Project street art festival.

The Banksy works are all owned by a private New Zealand collector and are part of the Oi You! Collection, never before seen in this country, that contains more than 70 rare and original pieces by the world’s leading street artists.

Presented by the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust, Outpost Project, Art from the Streets runs from 4 November until 11 December 2011 and features over 100 local and international artists and artists’ collectives, making it the biggest street art festival in the Southern Hemisphere. 

Architecture, art & avant-garde film collide

CarriageWorks.. the 'canvas' for film makers, artists and architects 

Filmmakers, artists and architects will combine their creative juices for the one-night only 'Expanded Architecture' exhibition  being presented at CarriageWorks as part of this year's Sydney Architecture Festival.  

Expanded Architecture will next week announce the winning ten collaborative proposals to project moving imagery on to the floors, ceiling and walls of the CarriageWorks centre in Sydney's Eveleigh. The event, which is free entry, will be hosted on the evening of Wednesday 26 October. Details of the works will be announced on this blog and via the  Sydney Architecture Festival website.

Here is your chance to rub shoulders with some of the top names in contemporary art, both living artists and the arts philanthropists and arts sector workers who support them.

On Thursday 15th September, a gala dinner will be hosted at the Art Gallery of NSW celebrating the main award winners in the categories of 'artist' and 'artist visionary'.

Guest speakers include Cate Blanchett and Edmund Capon, with live performances by the talented Katie Noon and her band Elixir.  All guests are up to win original art works by contemporary artists Jess MaNeil and Ildiko Kovacs. New Melbourne-based contemporary gallery KALIMANRAWLINS has revealed its artist stable with an inaugural group exhibition entitled ‘First Show’ featuring 14 Australian-based artists and nine artists currently living and working internationally in Germany, New Zealand, the Philippines, Sweden, UK and USA.

Vue de monde unveils major contemporary art commissions in new Rialto premises

The work of three contemporary artists will grace the new premises of Vue de monde at the Rialto in Melbourne.  

Owner and chef Shannon Bennett commissioned works by international artist Joseph Kosuth and Australian artists Mikala Dwyer and Emily Floyd.

Mikala Dwyer created an installation of transparent clouds crafted from industrial plastic that appear suspended above the Vue de monde bar to the backdrop of the city skyline. 

The installation was installed on the eve of a new solo exhibition of Dwyer's work to be opened at Anna Schwartz Gallery on Thursday 7 July. 

Dwyer describes the process of creating the sculptures as ‘sculpting emptiness’.  Her new exhibition adorns the gallery with sculptures and assemblages including ‘architectural jewellery’, a collaboratively made Ouija board, constructivist lamps and floating masses of zero-shaped balloons (pictured).

Young British Artists... the next wave

Ever wondered what the next wave of young British artists are exploring? A new exhibition entitled 'As the World Turns' offers Sydneysiders a rare opportunity to view the work of eight of London's hottest contemporary artists, aged between 30 and 39 years.

Curated by Nina Miall, Director of one of London's leading commercial galleries Haunch of Venison, the exhibition  includes a large suspended kite, memorabilia from a fictitious Kraut rock band and a recording of Vivaldi's Four Seasons slowed to the speed of the earth's rotation.

As the World Turns runs at Anna Schwartz Gallery at CarriageWorks (245 Wilson St, Darlington) until 21 August 2011.

Around the (art) world in 14 days

Vernissage of the Hong Kong Art Fair featuring light installations by Dan Flavin

The team at [art]iculate is just back from a whirlwind tour of some of the best contemporary visual art around the world taking in the Hong Kong Art Fair and the vernissage week of the 53rd Venice Biennale with a stopover at a few London galleries in between.

Highlights in Venice included Christian Marclay's 24 hour clock film collage in the Arsenale, Maurizio Cattelan's taxidermy pigeons peppered throughout the main Biennale Illuminazioni exhibition, tropical print military uniforms in the Korean pavilion, Urs Fischer's life-size, slow-melting wax figures and a wonderfully techno coloured light and perspex work by Gino Marotta in the Italian pavilion.
