Biennale of Sydney set for big reveal

It is the evening before the media preview, the first official reveal of the four major venues of the 18th Biennale of Sydney. The event will include a guided tour of the MCA, Art Gallery of NSW, Pier 2/3 at Walsh Bay and Cockatoo Island (pictured) and will reveal the work of more than 100 hundred artists exhibiting in what is one of Australia's most exciting contemporary art events.

Installation is underway for the 18^th Biennale of Sydney, with materials for site specific artworks arriving from all over the globe. By the end of the install period the Biennale will have received:  six tonnes of Sydney rock oysters; 1000 teacups from China; two tonnes of red sand; a six-foot-long steel shipping container; 800 coloured cotton spools; 25 metres of polystyrene foam; 1500 rubber sandals; 1700 bamboo wind chimes; five kilometres of coloured ribbon; 20 eskies; and three super soaker water pistols.

Running from 27 June until 16 September Artistic Directors Catherine de Zegher and Gerald McMaster have brought together more than 220 works by over 100 artists hailing from Australia, New Zealand, Asia Pacific, the Americas, Europe, South Africa and the Middle East. 

Experimenta unveils 5th International Biennial of Media Art

Experimenta Director Jen Muzuik this week unveiled program highlights for the 5^th International Biennial of Media Art. Running from September 14 to November 17 2012 under the theme of 'Speak to Me' the Biennial will be hosted at RMIT Gallery with exhibitions, projects and events in partnership with ACMI, Fed Square, the Wheeler Centre for Books and Ideas, NGV, Westspace, RMIT Project Space, City Village, Sofitel Melbourne on Collins and in Public Spaces around the City of Melbourne.

Rage installation comes to life

Installation was completed today for a major installation at Carriageworks featuring 102 televisions that have been positioned to spell the letters 'rage'. The installation celebrates the 25th anniversary of ABC Television's iconic Rage music program and is part of Vivid Sydney, running until 17th June 2012. More than 700 hours of music clips will be played on rotation on the TV screens and the installation is free and open to the public.

Mikala Dwyer at ARTHK12

This week [art]iculate is onsite in Hong Kong for ARTHK12, arguably one of the world's most influential contemporary art fairs. Hours have been invested in exploring 266 participating galleries from 38 countries around the world, more than half of whom are from Asia.

The Australian galleries have proven to be highlights, including Mikala Dwyer at Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery (pictured) and Alexander Seaton at Sullivan + Strumpf.  Choi Jeong Hwa's playful inflatable sculptures delighted, as did theperennial favourite Yinka Shonibare MBE, whose work could be seen in several booths around the fair.

Art HK founder announces new biennial Sydney Contemporary art fair

The founders of ART HK (pictured) are launching a new Sydney art fair in 2013

A major new biennial contemporary art fair will be launched in April 2013 by the founder of one of the world’s most respected and successful art fairs, ART HK.

The inaugural Sydney Contemporary will be held from Friday 12^th until Sunday 14^th April 2013 at the Hordern Pavillion and Royal Hall of Industries at Moore Park in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, with the Vernissage held on the evening of Thursday 11^th April 2013.

Featuring established and emerging galleries from Australia and overseas, Sydney Contemporary will cater to a broad spectrum of experienced and new collectors. It will celebrate the work of artists across a diverse range of mediums with a focus on global trends that span the modern and contemporary timeline and include painting, photography, works on paper, sculpture as well as featuring performance and new media.

Sydney Contemporary is organised by Art Fairs Australia Pty Ltd, a company founded by Tim Etchells of SME London Ltd. Etchells is founder of ART HK, the Hong Kong international art fair, which has grown to become a major fixture on the international art calendar. 

Brown Council's Kelly Doley wins emerging artist award

Sydney-based artist Kelly Doley has been named winner of the coveted ‘emerging artist’ category of the 2012 Redlands Westpac Art Prize, with Ben Quilty named winner of the ‘established artist’ category.  An exhibition of all 47 contemporary artists who were shortlisted for the Prize is on show at the National Art School in Sydney's Darlinghurst until 2 August 2012.


Kelly Doley is a founding member of Sydney performance/video collaboration Brown Council. Doley’s solo practice preferences collaboration and exchange with people and imagines possible futures and ways of life. The winning work by Doley, The Learning Centre: 49 Things Learnt About Humans, traverses painting, performance and installation. Since 2010, the young artist has received over 27 lessons from members of the public in exchange for a painting of their choice.
